A diary of my mothing activity covering highlights and photos from my moth trapping activities. Mainly Norfolk (UK), occasionally beyond. I may mention other wildlife sightings here, especially insects, but for birds see my birding diary.

Review of 2019 and 2020 - Moths: Smudges (Ypsolophidae)

SMUDGES (YPOSOLOPHIDAE)

Spindle Smudge Ypsolopha mucronella - None.  I caught 2 here in 2015 but they're starting to become a distant memory.  At the time they were the first vice-county records although there have been quite a few since.

Hooked Smudge Ypsolopha nemorella - One trapped in my garden on 16th July 2019 was my first here, and only my second anywhere.

Hooked Smudge Yposolopha nemorella, North Elmham, 16th July 2019

Honeysuckle Moth Ypsolopha dentella - One trapped in my garden on 8th August 2019 and then an exceptional 8 caught between 16th July and 16th August 2020.  I've recorded this species at home every year since 2014 apart from 2015, but before 2018 (when there were 3), never more than one a year.  Elsewhere one at Foxley Wood on 10th July 2020.

Wainscot Smudge Ypsolopha scabrella - Totals of 8 caught here between 16th July and 30th August 2019 and 4 between 18th July and 21st August 2020.  I'd caught 8 here in 2018 but only 2 in each of the years 2014-2017.  Also one next door in 2019 and 2 at the meadows in each year.

Wainscot Smudge Yposolopha scabrella, North Elmham Cathedral Meadows, 4th August 2019

Dark Smudge Ypsolopha horridella - None.  I've caught this species here twice, in 2017 and 2018.

Barred Smudge Ypsolopha alpella - 2 at Swanton Great Wood on 27th August 2019, my second record of this species following one at home in 2016.

Wood Smudge Ypsolopha sylvella - None.  I'm yet to see this species but there have been quite a few recent records from widespread locations so I should be in with a chance of finding it round here sooner or later.

White-shouldered Smudge Ypsolopha parentheslla - One in the garden on 5th September 2020.  I've now caught 7 here since 2014 but all of them in even years.  Elsewhere about 20 at Swanton Great Wood and one at Row Heath (West Runton) in late August 2019, the Swanton Great Wood total being far and away the most I've ever seen in a single night.

Variable Smudge Ypsolopha ustella - None.  I've only ever caught one here, in 2015.  I recorded it more often at Bawdeswell (3-4 2011-2013).

Pied Smudge Ypsolopha sequella - One in the garden on 10th August 2020, my third here following individuals in 2016 and 2018.  Elsewhere one in my next door neighbour's garden on 10th August 2019 and one at Whitwell Street on 3rd September 2020.

Pied Smudge Yposolopha sequella, North Elmham, 10th August 2020

Elm Smudge Yposolopha vittella - None.  I'm still waiting for my first.

Feathered Stem-moth Ochsenheimeria taurella - None.  I've never found any of the Ochsenheimeria species myself but Rob Yaxley brought me one to determine.  He found this species at two locations using his suction trap, not a method often deployed by moth-ers!
