Description

A diary of my mothing activity covering highlights and photos from my moth trapping activities. Mainly Norfolk (UK), occasionally beyond. I may mention other wildlife sightings here, especially insects, but for birds see my birding diary.

Review of 2019 and 2020 - Moths: Ermines (Yponomeutidae) (part 2: Swammerdamia complex, Cedestis and Ocnerostoma)

ERMINES (YPONOMEUTIDAE) (continued)

Copper-tipped Ermine Pseudoswammerdamia combinella - Singles in my garden moth trap on 1st June 2019 and 27th May 2020 were only my second and third records ever (first was here in May 2015).

Copper-tipped Ermine Pseudoswammerdamia combinella, North Elmham, 1st June 2019

Copper-tipped Ermine Pseudoswammerdamia combinella, North Elmham, 27th May 2020

Birch Ermine Swammerdamia caesiella - One in the garden trap on 30th July 2020.  I've only recorded this species twice before at home, in 2016 and 2018 - surprisingly scarce for a common birch-feeding species (there is a birch in my front garden and huge one in next door's garden).  Although this is grade 2 it would take a very clear and fresh example to satisfy me the ID was correct without gen detting.

male Birch Ermine Swammerdamia caesiella, North Elmham, 30th July 2020

Little Ermine Swammerdamia pyrella - One at the meadows on 25th May 2019 and then 11 in my garden between 21st July and 8th August, the worst showing here four 4 years.  A more typical 25 in my garden between 16th July and 13th August 2020.  Although fresh examples can be straightforward I find I have to confirm a lot of these by gen detting.  Some of the other species in this group can show a slight purply or coppery sheen to their terminal cilia (including Paraswammerdamia nebulella for example) and worn pyrella can lose this altogether. Other characters don't seem to be very reliable either, at least on any but the freshest specimens.

White-headed Ermine Paraswammerdamia albicapitella - 4 trapped at home and one at the meadows between 5th June and 30th August 2019 making it my equal-best year for this species, but this was bettered in 2020 when I caught 6 in the garden and 3 at the meadows between 25th May and 19th August.  Beware worn nebulella which can look very white on the thorax - I gen det any that aren't fresh and obvious and sometimes get a surprise.

White-headed Ermine Paraswammerdamia albicapitella, North Elmham, 12th June 2020

Hawthorn Ermine Paraswammerdamia nebulella - 10 trapped here between 23rd June and 25th July 2019 and 11 between 18th June and 31st July 2020.  Both fairly average years though well down on the 21 in 2018.

Gold Pine Ermine Cedestis gysseleniella - one trapped in my garden on 25th July 2019, my second here following one in 2016.

Gold Pine Ermine Cedestis gysseleniella, North Elmham, 25th July 2019

Brown Pine Ermine Cedestis subfasciella - One at Bintree Wood on 13th June 2020 and singles in the garden on 5th and 15th August.  I'd only ever seen one before, in my garden in 2015.

Other insects were Pond Olive Cloeon dipterum and Pale Evening Dun Procloeon bifidum (mayflies), the caddisflies Limnephilus flavicornis, Limnephilus lunatus and Athripsodes aterrimus, the leafhopper Iassus lanio and the beetle Lagria hirta.  There was also this icnhemon wasp which I naively thought might be sufficiently distinctive as to be identifiable.  Well I tried to take it through Gavin Broad's 2015 key to subfamilies and got to 4b.  The footnote says only one species of one of Aclastus and two of Gnypetomorpha should key here (though it doesn't say which species).  I can't find images of either that look like my insect, though I'm not sure if that's because there aren't many images online or if it's because I went wrong in the key (but it's very likely the latter - I find it very difficult to determine which veins are which, especially when the point is that they are missing).

Of 80 speies the following night just two were new for the year: Antler Moth and Lunar-spotted Pinion.

There were also the mayflies Pale Evening Dun Procloeon bifidum and Blue-winged Olive Serratella ignita, and caddisflies Plectrocnemia conspersa and Hydropsyche pellucidula.

I have tried on many occasions last year and this year to attract a Red-belted Clearwing to pheremone lure in the garden (and elsewhere).  It's not a common species in Norfolk and until recently the only records were from the Norwich area.  In the last couple of years with more people using pheremone lures more have turned up elsewhere with a few from the Brecks and quite a lot from the far west of the county, but there is still only one record at a similar latitude to North Elmham (Buxton Heath in 2016) and none further north in the county.  So having tried and failed so many times it began to seem reasonable to conclude that there aeren't any Red-belted Clearwings in this area.  But I'm not one to give up easily so I kept trying, and was absolutely delighted when I checked my pheremone trap on 18th July to find a single Red-belted Clearwing inside it.  Result!  Now if a Large Red-belted Clearwing could please oblige in the same way next year that would be perfect...

Coleophora therinella

The moths at home on 9th July weren't especially numerous, 160 of 68 species, but they included a few noteworthy ones.  Top among them was a Black-bindweed Case-bearer Coleophora therinella, new for the house and only the 6th record for Norfolk (although my third).

Among the caddis probable Hydropsyche siltalai wasn't noteworthy but Agrypnia pagetana was my first this year and seemingly not well-recorded in VC28.

Of 201 moths (79 species) that night the best was Forest Case-bearer Coleophora ibipennella, new for the house and possibly new altogether.  I'd caught one once before that keyed out to ibipennella but the keys aren't all that reliable and I messed up the dissection.  Nice to confirm one at last.
