I've now had a single (but only a single) Blackneck here in each of the last four years.

Other insects were Pond Olive Cloeon dipterum and Pale Evening Dun Procloeon bifidum (mayflies), the caddisflies Limnephilus flavicornis, Limnephilus lunatus and Athripsodes aterrimus, the leafhopper Iassus lanio and the beetle Lagria hirta.  There was also this icnhemon wasp which I naively thought might be sufficiently distinctive as to be identifiable.  Well I tried to take it through Gavin Broad's 2015 key to subfamilies and got to 4b.  The footnote says only one species of one of Aclastus and two of Gnypetomorpha should key here (though it doesn't say which species).  I can't find images of either that look like my insect, though I'm not sure if that's because there aren't many images online or if it's because I went wrong in the key (but it's very likely the latter - I find it very difficult to determine which veins are which, especially when the point is that they are missing).

I have tried on many occasions last year and this year to attract a Red-belted Clearwing to pheremone lure in the garden (and elsewhere).  It's not a common species in Norfolk and until recently the only records were from the Norwich area.  In the last couple of years with more people using pheremone lures more have turned up elsewhere with a few from the Brecks and quite a lot from the far west of the county, but there is still only one record at a similar latitude to North Elmham (Buxton Heath in 2016) and none further north in the county.  So having tried and failed so many times it began to seem reasonable to conclude that there aeren't any Red-belted Clearwings in this area.  But I'm not one to give up easily so I kept trying, and was absolutely delighted when I checked my pheremone trap on 18th July to find a single Red-belted Clearwing inside it.  Result!  Now if a Large Red-belted Clearwing could please oblige in the same way next year that would be perfect...

First post-Victorian Depressaria sordidatella

The stand-out highlight on 27th July was what some people might pass off as a boring non-descript brown moth, but it was its general lack of features that made me wonder what it might be.  Obviously a Depressaria species but not looking much like any I am very familiar with.  A bit like one or two species I've seen once or twice, but not a convincing match for any of them.  I keyed it out using the key in MOGBI and that came out as Depressaria sordidatella.  That would be great, it being a species that hasn't been recorded in Norfolk since 1874, but keying these things isn't entirely reliable so I dissected it for confirmation.  The male genitalia of Depressaria sordidatella are rather similar to those of pulcherrimella (which also hasn't been seen in Norfolk since the 19th century) and douglasella (which I found the second county record of last year), and this moth's genitalia were clearly of this type - so straight away it had to be something good.  It took me a while to work out what the differences were, as they aren't described in any of my references - I'm left to deduce them from the various images of the genitalia.  In the end I think I worked out what the differences are, and that led me in conjunction with the external characteristics to confirm this one as Chervil Flat-body Depressaria sordidatella, apparently the first modern record in Norfolk.

Another Dotted Ermel and other good moths

16th July was getting back to form.  Not the numbers of spcecies of a few days earlier but an improvement on the day before and a good night with several new for the year (for the garden).  Among these Lunar-spotted Pinion was a species I wasn't particularly expecting at home:

Lunar-spotted Pinion, North Elmham, 16th July

Least Carpet has only started appearing in numbers in very recent years.  I saw them for the first time last year.

Least Carpet, North Elmham, 16th July

The Brown Elm Bell Epinotia abbreviana was so worn it would have gone unidentified had I not dissected it, although traces of its normal pattern were just visible.

Brown Elm Bell Epinotia abbreviana, North Elmham, 16th July

Despite its vernacular name, I have never found Common Groundling Teleiodes vulgella to be common - in fact this one was only my second.

Common Groundling Teleiodes vulgella, North Elmham, 16th July

I've stumbled across a few of the next one before in various places, but I may have been lucky as this relatively distinctive tortrix isn't particularly well-recorded: White-barred Tortrix Olindia schumacherana.

White-barred Tortrix Olindia schumacherana, North Elmham, 16th July

Buff-tipped Marble Hedya ochroleucana is one I don't see all that often, though I used to get the occasional example at Bawdeswell.

Buff-tipped Marble Hedya ochroleucana, North Elmham, 16th July

Common Oak Case-bearer Coleophora lutipennella and Apple & Plum Case-bearer Coleophora spinella are both species I've only recorded occaisonally, though that probably has more to do with the need to dissect them to confirm than them being particularly scarce.

Common Oak Case-bearer Coleophora lutipennella (female, gen det), North Elmham, 16th July

Apple & Plum Case-bearer Coleophora spinella (female, gen det), North Elmham, 16th July

Two much more frequent species were also new for the year: Long-horned Flat-body Carcina quercana and Cloaked Minor.

Long-horned Flat-body Carcina quercana, North Elmham, 16th July

Cloaked Minor, North Elmham, 16th July

Although not new for the year, Dotted Ermel Ethmia dodecea was probably better than any of the above.
